Some New Things I Learned Yesterday
In no particular order
1. Wood glue does not work on plastic.
2. Neither does a nail file on a chipped tooth. You can try, but it won’t work. Your tooth may have chipped, but it’s tougher than you think.
3. If you search for images of “coping” on the photo gallery Unsplash you will get only 14 results. That is not enough, not in these times.
4. On the other hand, if you search Unsplash for “coping strategy,” you will have 396 images to consider. That’s much better. So maybe we’re okay. There are a lot of chessboards and chess pieces among them, however—not quite on point. And not a few images of heaps of jumbled puzzle pieces. Not reassuring.
5. “Gigil” is a Tagalog word to describe the intense feeling that comes from bearing witness to a beautiful, doll-like baby or to refer to the overwhelming urge to pinch or squeeze a golden retriever puppy. Good to know — babies and puppies abound, and now I’ve got this word in my back pocket.
6. J. D. Vance went to Greenland and not even the seals would clap or bark for him.
7. There are no penguins on Greenland. I learned this researching the preceding item.
8. Fresh mulch smells rich and earthy, saturated and dense with spring’s promise.
9. President Trump said that he is “not joking” about a third term. Is there any way I can unlearn that?

11. AI is no scientist. As you can see from the image below, white petals have fallen all over the yard.
When I took a photo of one and searched to identify it, AI told me that it was a zebra mussel, as shown in the image below. Not even close.
12. “Yoh” is a cry or exclamation used in South African English to express emotions or reactions such as surprise, wonder, admiration, shock, or distress. That’s a good one — I like that.
13. My favorite Dairy Queen where I live served 800 cones on free cone day. It was not a money-maker and depleted both the cone and the napkin supply but was still considered a success.
