That's what I was trying to suggest in the essay - that if it is not possible to volunteer by giving time, it is still possible to volunteer by paying attention to the people we encounter as we go about our daily business.
Thank you! I volunteer at a hospice home, a kitchen that makes meals for those who are food insecure, Ronald McDonald House, and a day shelter for homeless men where I live which I enjoy especially and maybe even immeasurably, from the staff and other volunteers to the men themselves. Everyone has a story and it is a real honor for me to be a part of it. Thank you again for reading and sharing your thoughts!
As an itinerant volunteer, I appreciate your interest in fulfilling community needs. I volunteer weekly at the local food pantry and serve as Chair of the Development Committee and Board member. I choose the same level of commitment for my college and church, which is more than just donating dollars. The return to me is immeasurable. This is a great reminder to others of how important volunteering is!
Some of us can't afford to volunteer because we are living on the edge of poverty and need all the money we can get. If you are going to be a volunteer, you need to be financially secure yourself.
